British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - alternatively referred to as ISIS - established jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any revival of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their courage," he added. "They were part of a great many British troops stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
